By Patrick Bushman

The Samsung Finesse r810c was released for Straight Talk Wireless in December, 2009, and created a LOT of buzz among prepaid phone users. At first glance, the r810c appears to be everything prepaid users have been dreaming of: it includes a large touch screen, high-speed EVDO data connection, music player, 2.0 mp camera, camcorder, bluetooth, and many other features.

To top it all off, this phone is now available on Straight Talk’s inexpensive, no-contract plans. At $45 per month, the unlimited calling, text, and data plan is pretty appealing, especially when that data is coming over a 3G connection. For people who, like me, are geeky enough to lust after the iPhone but “frugal” enough to stick to prepaid, this might be the perfect solution.

In fact, I couldn’t resist. After reading a few of the initial reviews of the Finesse from other Straight Talk users, I bit the bullet and purchased my own Samsung r810c, along with a month of unlimited service.

I’ve just received the phone, and I’m so enamored with the device I set up a separate Samsung r810c website to publish my review of the phone and share tips and tricks with other Straight Talk users. As I gain more experience with the Finesse, I’ll be putting up a very detailed review of the phone. I’ll also do my best to answer any questions that people might have if I happen to miss important information in my review.

As I said above, I’ve only had the phone a few days, so I haven’t used it enough to really test it out. Here’s what I can tell you so far, though – the voice quality seems adequate, but not fantastic. I would say it’s on par with the Samsung r451c, another Straight Talk phone released earlier this fall, but not quite as good as the LG 290c and 220c, also recent models on Straight Talk.

What is beyond compare, though, is the touch screen and EVDO browser. The touch screen definitely takes some getting used to, but I think I’ll grow to like it. It’s similar to an iPhone or iPod touch as far as how the touch screen works, but just a little different in sensitivity.

One thing worth noting here is that, unlike the aforementioned Apple products, the Finesse lacks “multi-touch” functionality. This means that the screen can sense only one “touch” at time, thus preventing use of Apple’s popular pinch-to-zoom operation. As an iPod touch user, I find that a little disappointing. Beyond that disappointment, though, I like the touch screen. This is the first touch-screen phone I’ve used. It’s nice to use, and even nicer to look at it

One thing that I really like is the EVDO internet access. I’ve had several phones now with internet access, but used them all very little because they were so slow. That is not the case with the r810c’s 3G data. It’s certainly not as fast as broadband internet at your home, but it’s fast enough that I’d be happy to use it to pass time while waiting in a waiting room or as a passenger in a vehicle.

Just as a point of reference, I was able to load the CNN website in about a minute, complete with a dozen pictures. On previous prepaid phones, if it loaded at all it would have taken several minutes to load a site like CNN, and that wouldn’t have included any pictures at all.

To check my email from my Yahoo! email account, it took me about 3 minutes to load the site, enter my password, and download my messages. I then reset the home page to yahoo mail, and saved my login info automatically. Now I can get to my new messages in about 45 seconds.

I have a lot more to discuss with this phone, and I’ll be putting some time into getting it up on my new site at the site listed in the resource box. I hope to see you there.

How Straight Talk Prepay Works

The Straight Talk Wireless programs are built to be competitive with post paid cellphone plans. A long term contract cellular plan will require you to sign a one year or two year long term contract to get service. Straight Talk is prepaid so you make payment for for your service prior to using it and if you use all of your units or the time period expires you lose service. You will not get a end of contract fee and in order to commence service just as before you may purchase a Walmart Straight Talk cellphone card and reactivate your phone.

Straight Talk Prepaid is a partnership with Walmart, Tracfone wireless and Verizon. All phones are CDMA and work on the Verizon Wireless network.

Straight Talk Prepay has two plans the $30 monthly All You Need plan and the $45 per 30 days Unlimited plan.

Straight Talk All You Need Plan

This plan offers 1,000 minutes per 30 days, 1,000 texts per thirty days and 30 meg of data transfer per thirty days. This Walmart Straight Talk plan will cost you $30 per 30 days.

Unlimited Plan

This Straight Talk plan serves up unlimited calling, unlimited text messaging and unlimited data transfer for $45 per thirty days.

You can buy your Straight Talk Wireless Prepaid Phone or service online at Straight Talk.com or at Walmart.

Do my Straight Talk Minutes roll over?

No your minutes will not roll over but 1000 minutes for $30 is only 3.3 cents a minute. With Straight Talk when you add a phone card it resets your 30 days. There is no rollover or stacking of time or minutes.

Do Not add a Straight Talk card to your phone until you need it. If you have minutes and time left on your phone when you add another card you will only have the minutes and time added by the new card.

If you have 400 minutes and 10 days left on your Straight Talk service and you add a 30 day 1,000 minute card you will end up with 30 days and 1,000 minutes. You will not get the 400 minutes or ten days you had left.

Wait until you are almost out of either minutes or time before adding a Straight Talk Card.

You will have to have one of the phones that has web access and if you do you should be able to access most email programs. I know you will be able to access both Yahoo Mail and Gmail.

This service includes Unlimited calling, Unlimited text messages, and Unlimited data for your phone when using the Straight Talk Unlimited plan. Furthermore this is the most affordable cost Countrywide Unlimited program that exists.

They are a brand new Prepay Wireless Cell phone company which is a three way partnership of Walmart, Verizon Wireless and Tracfone. Walmart is supplying the marketing, Tracfone is providing the prepaid cell phone software and the customer service network and Verizon Wireless is to provide the cellphone system.

What is the Straight Talk “All you Need” Plan?

All you Need is a different plan that Straight Talk also offers. It is $30 per month and it includes 1000 units, 1, 000 texts, and 30 meg of data transfer. This is the best price available for units of pre pay cell minutes. If you are not using over 1, 000 minutes thirty days and you are spending more than$ 30 every thirty days this is a better option for you than the Unlimited plan.

By Judy Wolvaardt

My phone cost me $500. Let’s see what it is capable of. Firstly, I needed a mobile to work away from the office and this one has not let me down. It uses Microsoft Office Mobile suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and it includes Windows Media Play 10 (for mobiles), Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer & Adobe Reader (which is great for scanned documents). My XV6800 comes with 64 megabytes RAM, 256 megabytes flash memory and 150 megabytes free memory for new installations.

If I need more storage, it has a microSD card slot that takes up to 4 gigabytes. I find it doesn’t lag much between windows and documents with large graphics as some mobiles do and I enjoy using push email using wireless sync or MS Exchange Active Sync. It has the usual BlueTooth features, headsets, hands-free and ports. My XV6800 boasts a horizontal slider QWERTY keyboard, with an adjusting screen to match it horizontally returning back to vertical when the slider keyboard is replaced. The selection keys are slightly too close to the screen though not easy to use. The 2.8 inch touchscreen is awesome – touch-friendly with vibrant, colourful images. The inbuilt camera of this phone has a flash (the manufacturer’s actually remembered to install one! Amazing!).

This means I can take photographs inside. It is a two megapixel camera so the qualities of the images leave much to be desired, but useful along with its video feature for transferring in messages to others. I have Voice Command button (believe it or not) to enable me to record voice messages. What I like most about my XV6800 is that it’s simple to use. It has dedicated buttons on the front and side to access most frequently needed features. It’s a breeze to use. I’d recommend it.

How Straight Talk Works

The Straight Talk Prepaid programs have been designed to compete with long term contract phone plans. A post paid mobile phone plan will require you to sign a one year or two year contract to get service. Straight Talk Wireless Prepaid is prepaid which means that you have to pay for your service prior to using it and if you use up all your minutes or the time period expires you lose service. You will not have a termination fee and if you would like to initiate service just as before you will have to buy a Straight Talk Prepay cellular phone card and reactivate your cellular.

Straight Talk Prepaid is a joint venture with Walmart, Tracfone wireless and Verizon. All phones are CDMA and work on the Verizon Wireless network.

Straight Talk has 2 programs the $30 per thirty days Straight Talk All You Need plan and the $45 per month Unlimited plan.

All You Need Plan

This plan offers 1,000 minutes per month, 1,000 texts per month and 30 meg of data transfer per thirty days. This Straight Talk Wireless Prepaid plan costs $30 per 30 days.
